At the request of Mayor Douglas B. England, the Urban Enterprise Zone undertook to work with a local landscaper in 2008 to beautify the area between Spring Street on the north and the river on the south; Bank Street on the east and Scribner Drive on the west.
In 2009, a second landscaping firm joined the group and a more permanent approach was taken as the mission of beautification turned to sustainable landscaping.
The traffic islands along Market Street had been planted with bushes. Some of these bushes were removed and replaced by native grasses and flowers. The bump-outs at the intersections of Market Street and State, Pearl, and Bank streets were cleaned out, and new, more appropriate flowers and bushes were planted. At this time, new landscaping is being planned for Bank and Main streets.
In December 2008, the NAUEA received a $10,000 grant from the Horseshoe Foundation toward this project. The Zone hired a landscape-engineering firm (Heritage Engineers) in Jeffersonville to take over the day-to-day work of the project. This resulted in the engineering firm overseeing the landscaping firms in placing plants, flowers, trees, etc.
The Zone worked with the Horseshoe Foundation, the City of New Albany, Lincoln Springs Tree Farm, Harvest Homecoming, Equinox Gardening and Heritage Engineering to landscape the portion of Market Street between Pearl Street and Hauss Square.
This project will continue and expects two more summers before the entire downtown area is completed. It is hoped that new partners will be added to the existing groups in these next two years.
